Advanced Cat and Dog Cancer Services in Tulsa
A cat or dog cancer diagnosis can be scary, but it doesn’t have to be. At the Animal Emergency Center, we partner and work closely with Dr. Melinda Upton, a board-certified oncology (cancer) specialist. Dr. Upton works in the same building with us and provides specialized cancer diagnostics and treatments for companion animals.
If you have any questions regarding cat or dog cancer diagnostics and treatment, please contact Dr. Upton's office directly at 918-663-3994.
Extensive Cat and Dog Cancer Diagnostics
Diagnosing cat or dog cancer accurately is the first step towards remission. Dr. Upton uses a variety of diagnostic techniques in order to fully understand the cancer. These may include:
- Fine-needle aspirates
- Blood work
- CT scans for cancer staging
Effective Cat and Dog Cancer Treatments
Once we form a complete understanding of your cat or dog’s cancer, Dr. Upton and her staff will develop a treatment plan. This may include:
- Surgery – to remove any tumors or to explore how the cancer has spread
- Chemotherapy – similar to human medicine, chemotherapy involves potent medication that attacks cancer cells, as well as healthy cells in the process. However, it’s important to note that side effects from chemo are often much less severe in our pets than they are in people.
- Immunotherapy – for some types of cancer, immunotherapy is an option. This treatment involves the activation of your pet’s own immune system to fight cancer off on its own. Side effects from this treatment are often minimal or non-existent.
